30th Annual Sports Auction Recap

The 30th Annual Guardsmen Celebrity Dinner and Sports Auction benefiting The Guardsmen and the Giants Community Fund was held on Thursday, February 8th at the Four Seasons San Francisco for over 400 guests and celebrities.

Damon Bruce, the host of 95.7 The Game, emceed this year’s event once again as The Guardsmen welcomed an A-list cast of celebrities including: NFL legend Jerry Rice; USA Rugby CEO Dan Payne; NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry; San Francisco Giants Jeremy Affeldt, Mark Melancon, Jose Alguacil, Ty Blach, Nick Hundley, Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens, Marvin Benard Vida Blue, Tito Fuentes, and Rich Murray.

Additionally, The Guardsmen hosted several other celebrities and sports stars including San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell, Keena Turner, Barry Sims, Jennifer Azzi, Dennis Brown, SFPD Police Chief William “Bill” Scott, Craig Morton, Gary Weaver, Erica Abke, Joe Fonzi, Joe Martin, Harold Pressley and Bob Lee.

Before the event, VIP guests and celebrities enjoyed a beautiful evening and San Francisco’s skyline at a reception help on the Four Seasons’ outdoor patio.

Guests then mingled and perused the Silent Auction, with opportunities to bid on signed memorabilia from notable moments in the Bay Area sports history, once in a lifetime experiences, and rare wines from the region. The 49ers, Golden State Warriors, and San Francisco Giants dynasties were proudly represented in this year’s auction items.

This year The Guardsmen were honored to display the Giants’ World Series Championship Trophies and the 49ers’ collection of Vince Lombardi Trophies, with many guests seizing the opportunity to pose for pictures.

Damon Bruce opened the dinner program with celebrity introductions and a special award for USA Rugby CEO Dan Payne, who was commemorated for his integral role in bringing the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 to San Francisco,. NFL legend Jerry Rice then participated in a Q&A, reminiscing about his journey to becoming a Hall of Fame wide receiver, three-time Superbowl champion, and holder of 36 NFL records.

The Live Auction featured a variety of lots from local Bay Area experiences to international travel packages. Auctioneer Keith McLane kept the energy high and drove frenetic bidding action with an assist from The Guardsmen’s own Ish Simpson and Damon Bruce.

At the midpoint of the Live Auction, The Guardsmen were joined by special guest Valentin Goborets, a Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco Youth of the Year for Camp Mendocino and a senior at George Washington High School. Valentin is a five-year member of the Don Fisher Clubhouse and the former Ernest Ingold Clubhouse, and is actively involved in numerous leadership programs.Val, who plans to attend law school to help those who cannot afford legal representation, shared his story about how the work of The Guardsmen, the Giants Community Fund, and Camp Mendocino have positively affected his life.

When the evening was over, over $500,000 was raised, benefiting Bay Area youth as part of the ongoing mission of The Guardsmen and the Giants Community Fund.
