The Guardsmen kicked off Summer in the City this year by hosting the 2nd Annual San Francisco Lawn Party on Marina Green. The event has been a welcome addition to the Guardsmen suite of fundraisers and generated a significant turnout of over 2000 people from all across the Bay Area. The organization aimed to build on a successful inaugural event last year and establish the San Francisco Lawn Party as an annual event to kick off Summer. As with all other Guardsmen fundraisers, the proceeds of the San Francisco Lawn Party support Bay Area youth with access to scholarships for private schools and camperships to Summer camps across Northern California.
The Marina Green was a perfect location for the SF Lawn Party and the event itself took place inside a 5-acre fence with areas for bocce, horseshoes, volleyball, croquet, and kickball. Advance ticket sales were strong, but the day of weather and word of mouth/social media check-ins really boosted walk-up sales – a huge contributor to the overall fundraising effort.
The centerpiece for lawn games was a 64-team Baggo tournament and the teams continued last year’s tradition of heavy competition not only in the game itself but also team names and costumes. The tournament was a success and once again ran smoothly thanks to Ivan Mercer who coordinated all things cornhole. Other guests had a blast setting up their own competitions across Marina Green in bocce, horse shoes and volleyball.
The Guardsmen welcomed back acts including My Peoples, Strong Like Bull and DJ Ajax to provide live music throughout the event and culminated with a closing set by Wonderbread 5 who kept the crowd dancing right up until the end. The VIP tent for the event was positioned next to the stage providing a great vantage point to view the live music and the iconic San Francisco Bay view of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands.
The event was successful with thanks to all of the sponsors particularly primary donors Glass Door, Digital Foundry, and Turner Construction. Day-of logistics was supported greatly by generous equipment donations from Sunbelt Rentals and Clean Site Services. Other major contributors to the successful day include: Tommy’s Margarita Mix, Sports Basement, Chevron, DBI Beverage, Lagunitas, Golden Road Brewing, Tenth and Blake Beer Company, Strike Brewing Co, and Sequin Wines.
